About GERALDTON

Geraldton is located 424 km north of Perth and is the largest town in the Central West region of Western Australia. The explorer A Gregory travelled through the area in 1850 and discovered lead on the Murchison River. The surrounding hinterland was gradually settled by farmers. In the 1860s it became the major port north of Fremantle and was officially proclaimed a town in 1871. In the 1890s Geraldton became the major port for the Murchison gold rushes, and sparked a period of growth.

Geraldton had become the major centre for the surrounding wheat belt by World War I. It is a popular winter seaside holiday destination with an average of eight hours of sunshine every day, and is an important centre for fishing (Geraldton has the largest lobster fleet on the west coast), wheat, and sheep. The Port of Geraldton is Australia's second largest grain export port, with more than half the exports being generated by minerals and iron ore.
