About GREENOUGH

Greenough is located 400 km north of Perth in the Central West region of Western Australia. The valley was first explored in 1839 by George Grey who named the area after his sponsor, Sir George Bellas Greenough, then the president of the Royal Geographical Society. The area was first settled in 1852 and developed into a very successful wheat growing area. However, over a period of years from 1872 to 1890, a cyclone, flooding, and the wheat being adversely affected by red rust, most of the farmers had left the area by 1900 to try their luck in the gold fields.

Greenough fell into a state of disrepair until an effort was made to revitalise the settlement in the 1980s.

Today, it is realistically a ghost town which is considered to be one of the most interesting historical towns in Australia, with beautifully preserved nineteenth century buildings. In the heart of the town, eleven buildings are administered by the National Trust.
