About the Coral Coast Region

The Coral Coast Region of Western Australia is the coastal region extending for from just south of the small fishing town of Cervantes, about 231 km north north-west of the State capital, Perth, to Exmouth, on the tip of the North West Cape, 1270 km north of Perth. The region is named for its coral formations, unusual in such southerly latitudes.

The region’s pristine beaches attract tourists from all of Australia and abroad, while the length of the coastline keeps it from becoming too cluttered with sightseers.

Inland from Cervantes is the Nambung National Park, in which large obelisk-like limestone formations known as the Pinnacles are a popular attraction, while to the north of Cervantes is Jurien Bay, which offers excellent swimming and snorkeling in its Marine Park, from which migrating whales can be seen annually.

Geraldton, 424 km north of Perth, is a busier city, with a fine selection of beaches, parks, restaurants, theatres and museums. It is also a popular centre for horse-racing and windsurfing. Nearby is the Hutt River Principality, a farming property which in 1970 proclaimed itself an independent sovereign state. Australia’s refusal to acknowledge it as such hasn’t stopped the principality from producing its own very collectable currency.

Further north is Kalbarri, home to the a spectacular parrot breeding centre known as the Rainbow Jungle and gateway to Kalbarri National Park, where from July to October around 800 varieties of wildflowers transform the landscape.

Around 850 km north of Perth is Shark Bay, a World Heritage listed site at the westernmost reach of the Australian mainland. In the bay are the largest and densest meadows of sea-grass known, covering an area of around 4000 km sq. It is also home to a very large population of dugongs and numerous dolphins. One of Australia’s best loved traditions is the hand-feeding of highly sociable dolphins at Monkey Mia on the bay, a practice which has continued since the mid-1960s.
