About ESPERANCE

Esperance is located 721 km south-east of Perth. The Dutch were the first Europeans into the area in 1627 when the ''Gulde Zeepaard'' sailed across the Great Australian Bight. A 1628 Dutch chart of the southern coast of Australia shows the islands off Esperance. In 1792 Captain Bruni d'Entrescasteaux, who was sheltering his vessel ''Le Recherche'' in the bay from a storm, gave the harbour the name of Esperance Bay. Sealers and whalers lived in the area during the 1820s and 1830s.

The first settlers were the Dempster brothers who arrived in the area in 1863, having driven sheep, cattle and horses from Northam. The Overland Telegraph was opened in 1876 and the town came into existence in 1893 as a port facility. The area eventually became successful in the production of sheep, wheat and cattle.

The combination of pristine white sands, small bays, gently rounded granite cliffs, the intense blue waters, and the glorious wildflowers make Esperance one of the true wonders of the Australian coastline.

There are various national parks in the area including Peak Charles National Park (100 km north), Cape Arid National Park (125 km east), Stokes Inlet National Park (80 km west), Cape Le Grand National Park (50 km south-east). Other local attractions include Museum Park Period Village, Rotary Lookout, Observatory Point and Lookout, the Great Ocean Drive and beaches to the west of the town, and the Recherche Archipelago (110 offshore islands).

Cruises to the Archipelago include a stop-off at Woody Island which is the only island open to visitors.
