About KALGOORLIE

Kalgoorlie is located 600 km east of Perth. The name is derived from the the Wangai Aboriginal word 'Karlkurla', believed to mean 'place of the silky pears'. In 1893, three prospectors camped in the area as one of their horses had cast a shoe. One of the men, Paddy Hannan, accidentally discovered several gold nuggets whilst recasting the shoe. He registered his claim the next day, and hundreds of prospectors flocked to the area. The mining of gold and other metals such as nickel have been the major industries in Kalgoorlie ever since.

In 1903 the construction of a 564 km pipeline was completed. It brought water from Perth and ensured the survival of the wheat belt and the goldfields which had previously relied on unreliable wells, water holes and condensers.

Some of the local tourist attractions include the Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame, the Loopline Railway, the School of Mines and Mineral Museum, the WA Museum of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, and the Langtrees 181 Brothel.
