About the Golden Outback Region

The Golden Outback Region of Western Australia comprises most of the southern half of the State, excluding the western coastal areas. It does, however, include the southern coast from the Fitzgerald National Park to the South Australian border.

The Fitzgerald National Park, about 419 km south-east of the State capital, Perth, is home to a wide range of very rare native animals, including a few which were believed to be extinct until their reappearance in the park, and a vast array of wildflowers, which make a spectacular show in both spring and autumn. The seaside towns of Bremer Bay on the west of the park and Hopetoun on the east cater for tourists visiting the area.

Further east along the coast is the town of Esperance, popular with visitors from both the western coast and the inland mining centres of the Golden Outback. In the west of the town is the Pink Lake, the waters of which get their colour from high concentrations of red algae. Esperance Shire also contains three national parks: Stokes, Cape Le Grand (which is said to contain Australia’s whitest sandy beaches) and Cape Arid.

Inland the western district is known as the Wheatbelt, while the remainder is of a more arid, typically outback appearance. The Wheatbelt attracts many visitors from the coast, and farm stay accommodation is common. There are a number of spectacular geological formations in the area too, most notable Wave Rock, near the town of Hyden, a large granite outcrop eroded into the shape of a wave on the verge of breaking.

The settlement of most of the remainder of the region owes its existence to mining. Mount Magnet, 573 km north-east of Perth, is so named for the quantities of iron in the area, which affected the compasses of its first European visitors. Further west, the gold mining for which the region is named is still a major industry. Kalgoorlie is the most populous city in the area, and like most surrounding towns owes its existence to the gold rush that began in 1893.
