About BROOME
Broome is located on Roebuck Bay, 2200km north of Perth. The town site was named in 1883 by Sir Frederick Napier Broome, who was the Governor of Western Australia at the time. At the time a few pearlers, some local Aborigines, pearling luggers and a few shanties made up the settlement and it wasn't until the submarine telegraph cable was routed through Broome that the town began to develop. Thereafter the town grew rapidly, driven by the search for pearls and the port facilities which were also used by the local pastoralists.
The search for pearl divers was unceasing. Aborigines, Malays, Chinese, Japanese, Europeans and Filipinos created a mix of nationalities and cultures and the town was awash with pubs, brothels and gaming houses. Prior to the establishment of apparatus diving in the late 1880s, many pearl divers died, from the bends, or by drowning or shark attack. The economy of the town collapsed with the outbreak of war in 1914, and after the war recovery was slow. A shortage of white pearl fishers caused the industry to become severely depressed. The Japanese were very important to the economy of Broome, and by 1941 they outnumbered Australians in the area. The already depressed economy of the town was further exacerbated when the entire Japanese population was interned during World War II.
After World War II, the pearling industry started up again with cultured pearls (the process was learnt from Kokichi Mikimoto). By the 1980s the industry was earning over $50 million for Broome annually.
Modern Broome is known as the secret pearl of WA and the gateway to the Kimberley region. The area has beautiful beaches, a wide range of activities, and accommodation options to suit all budgets. Other local attractions include Broome Crocodile Park, Eighty Mile Beach, the Pindan soils (where the red soils meet the white sands of the beaches), Pearl Luggers in Chinatown, and the Japanese Cemetery which bears witness to the close ties between Japan an
