About HALLS CREEK

Halls Creek is located 2977 km from Perth, and roughly midway between Kununurra and Derby. The area was first explored by Alexander Forrest in 1879. His brother John Forrest, who was the WA Surveyor-General (and later Western Australia's first Premier), surveyed the area and noted 'distinct indications of gold'. The first discovery of payable gold in Western Australia in 1885 brought boom times to the area, however, a harsh and inhospitable environment, transportation problems and the discovery of gold at Coolgardie reduced Halls Creek to a ghost town within three years.

Halls Creek was relocated in 1848 due to a lack of water and the re-routing of the main Derby-Kununurra Road. The relocation process was finalised by 1954, and the old town site was finally abandoned and only remnants of the original settlement remain.

Today Halls Creek is a small, predominantly Aboriginal settlement. Local attractions include the Bungle Bungles which are one of the wonders of outback Australia, the China Wall which is a natural white quartz formation which looks like a small version of the Great Wall of China, and Wolfe Creek Crater.
