About KUNUNURRA

Kununurra is located 1057 km from Broome. In 1879 Alexander Forrest became the first white man to explore the district. He named the Kimberley district, including the Margaret and Ord Rivers, and King Leopold Ranges. The famous Durack family established cattle stations in the Kimberleys, including Lissadell, Argyle, Rosewood and Ivanhoe.

Kimberley Durack began experimenting with the possibility of growing cash crops on the rich black alluvial soils of the Order River valley. Kununurra came into existence in the early 1960s as a construction centre for the Order River Scheme.

Kununurra today is a township which services the surrounding district. The greatest attraction is undoubtedly the Mirima Hidden Valley National Park which was formed by the erosion of the quartz sandstone by the waters of Lily Creek, resulting in unusual and dramatic scenery. The area abounds in wildlife and there are several walking trails. Another local attraction is Celebrity Tree Park which is an arboretum on the shores of Lake Kununurra.
