Port Hedland is located 1761 km north of Perth in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. The original inhabitants, the Karriyarra Aboriginal people, called the area 'Marapikurrinya' for the hand shaped formation of the tidal creeks which come off the natural harbour.
The coastline of Port Hedland was first explored by a number of Dutch vessels in the 1600s.

In 1863 Captain Peter Hedland anchored the ''Mystery'' in a natural harbour which he named Mangrove Harbour. Hedland was looking for a place to land stock, however, the severe tides and lack of fresh water led him to Cossack Harbour, a smaller harbour to the south. The site was investigated as a possible town site in 1866, however, there were access difficulties and a lack of good water. In the late 1870s the town gained a reputation as a wild frontier settlement as the pearling luggers began using it. It was not until exports from nearby goldfields became too much for the Cossack Port that the Port Hedland township was gazetted in 1896.

Today, Port Hedland is the main port for the Pilbara iron ore. Excellent fishing, superb birdlife, a variety of aquatic leisure activities, mangrove crabbing, and harbour tours are just some of the attractions. It is home to flatback turtles and humpback whales. Broome, Kimberley, Cape Keraudren, Eighty Mile Beach and the Millstream and Karijini National Parks are all within driving distance.
