About the North West / Kimberleys Region

The North-West and Kimberley Region of Western Australia occupies the northern section of the State from the western coast around Dampier and Karratha across to the Northern Territory border. The region is one of Australia’s least populous, with only around 41,000 living in an area roughly the size of California. It does, however, also attract many tourists wishing to explore one of the country’s great wilderness areas.

The region’s climate is tropical, inclined to seasonal monsoon troughs, in the coastal area. The central area is far more arid, with the 360,000 km sq the Great Sandy Desert spreading between the Pilbarra and Kimberley ranges. Settlements such as the mining town of Marble Bar in the Pilbararra are considered among the hottest places on Earth.

These scenery of these many of these arid areas is spectacular enough to ensure a steady flow of visitors. The Karinji National Park, in the Hammersley Ranges, for example, has an array of magnificent gorges, waterfalls and rock pools that delight travellers. Given the area’s reputation for extremely hot weather, tours to the many huge and unspoilt national parks in the area are at the most popular during winter months.

On the coast, the Region’s southernmost major settlement is Port Hedland, Australia’s highest tonnage port. Despite the city’s heavy industry, its surrounds are still excellent examples of the region’s coast. To the north of the town is Eighty Mile Beach, a particularly good spot for shell collectors and bird-watchers. Many migratory birds feed in the wetlands of this area, some having flown from as far away as the Arctic Circle.

The next major town is Broome, famous for its pearl farming, and one of the region’s most beautiful beaches, Cable Beach, part of which is one of Australia’s most famous clothing optional stretches of coastline. Further north is the Dampier Peninsula, an area with limited services but exceptional beauty, that is also home to a rich Aboriginal heritage.
