About the Perth Region
The glittering lights of Perth on the lonely West Australian coastline are so far away from other cities they are clearly visible from space. The city itself is smaller than other Australian capitals, but is growing rapidly. Vibrant highrise on William Street and the Esplanade, built by the wealth of the mining boom sits alongside the remainder of Perth’s gold rush history, which include Government House, (1864), The Mint (1899) St George’s Anglican Cathedral and St Mary’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, and the Brass Monkey Hotel on St George’s Terrace, the most photographed hotel in WA and a great night out.
The city has a thriving shopping area, centred in the pedestrian-only Hay and Murray St Malls. If alternative is more your style, try the Subiaco Pavilion Markets on a weekend.
The heart of Perth sits right by the Swan River. Barrack St runs through the CBD and ends at riverside Barrack Square and the ferry terminal. Barrack Square is home to the Swan Bell Tower, which contains 12 bells from London’s St-Martin-in- the Fields, and rings daily.
Ferries go to Rottnest Island, to South Perth and to Perth Zoo, or to Rockingham, where you can swim with dolphins or go scuba diving.
Walk or cycle along the foreshores of the Swan River, and take time out in beautiful King’s Park, 400 ha, which includes landscaped gardens and pristine bushland.
The federation walk includes a raised walk that rises high above the tree-tops for a magnificent view. Further afield is the Aquarium, with its submerged tunnel and touch pool, the Museum of Childhood at Claremont, and of course, 30km of white sandy beaches bordering the Indian Ocean. Start with Cottlesloe, and join in the ‘Sunday afternoon sessions’, and relax with a glass of wine and some music in one of the many beachfront pubs. Or visit Mettam’s Pool which has reefs at both ends for snorklers, and a calm sea with no swell which is popular with young families or older people.
Just to the south of Perth is Fremantle. Fremantle was intended to be the port for the fledgling colony, and as a result, is the more historic of the two cities. Unsurprisingly for a former penal colony, the oldest buildings are the Roundhouse, a former jail, and the convict-built Fremantle prison, both of which are now Museums. Fans of the otherworldly can do a candlelight tour of the prison, or visit the old Quarantine Centre at Woodman’s Point. The Fremantle Museum proper is housed in a magnificent gothic revival mansion, once an insane asylum, and the wreckage of the ship, The Batavia, can be seen in The Maritime museum.
Modern Fremantle has a lively arts and music scene, and a merchant tradition as a port city, with two big markets and plenty of specialty shops.
