Augusta is located 317 km south of Perth, at the south-western tip of Australia. The Dutch were the first Europeans to site the area in 1622, which they named 't Landt van de Leeuwin' (the land of the lioness). In 1801 Matthew Flinders named the south-western tip Cape Leeuwin in honour of the Dutch who had first sighted the headland. Whalers and sealers occupied the area for many years, seeking protection from the stormy southern ocean. A shipload of prospective settlers arrived from England in 1830 on the ''Warrior'' with the intention of settling around the rich land of the Swan River, however, most of that land had already been taken up, so they moved south to the present site of Augusta. Captain James Stirling, who had arrived on the ''Warrior'', named the township Augusta after the daughter of King George III, Princess Augusta Sophia.

Many of the original settlers left the area due to the hardships of life on the harsh land. Augusta developed slowly, the railway line reached the town in 1925 and the area was used for soldier settlers who took up a number of dairy farms after World War II.

Some local attractions include Cape Leeuwin including the Lighthouse, Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, Hamelin Bay, the Jewel Cave, August Historical Museum, and the Hamelin Bay Wreck Trail which explores numerous ship wrecks in the Bay (boat and diving qualifications are required).
