About BUSSELTON

Busselton is the northernmost town in the southwest Cape Region of Western Australia. The area was first settled by Europeans in 1832 when some of the early settlers from Augusta moved to the rich and fertile valley of the Vasse River. One of the settlers, John Garrett Bussell settled on the banks of the Vasse with his family. A town site was surveyed in 1838 and the town grew because of the port facilities in Geographe Bay, where produce from the area (particularly horses) was being exported to India. Geographe Bay became a popular destination for whaling ships, and dairy, beef and timber production ensured the growth of the district.

Today, Busselton is Western Australia's premier seaside resort town. There is a variety of accommodation, numerous historical buildings and white sandy beaches which are sheltered from most prevailing winds. The waters of Geographe Bay are an aquatic playground for swimming, water skiing, snorkelling, scuba diving, windsurfing, sailing and fishing.

Other attractions include the Underwater Observatory and Busselton Jetty, a 2km wooden structure which is the longest jetty in the Southern Hemisphere.
